Third Annual Turkey Trot Held at Raven Rock Golf Course

LETCHER COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) – Members of the Letcher County community held their third annual Turkey Trot on Saturday.

Held at the Raven Rock Golf Course in Jenkins, the event featured a “fun run” for the kids, a 5km run and a 10km run.

Proceeds from the event were donated to the Gray Matters Foundation.

“We were humiliated. We as a community, a small community, love to support each other, ”said co-founder Brandon Robinson. “It’s something that I think is a big event.”

The one Robinson said he wanted to get personally involved with.

“I signed up and found I was going to have a second battle with cancer. I am happy to be here today and I am happy to participate in this event, ”he said. “Spend time with good friends. I don’t know if I’m going to run all the time, but I’ll at least try to walk.

Tourism director Clay Christian said attendance at the event was great.

“We had a lot of people, obviously, from Kentucky but from Virginia, West Virginia and Pennsylvania,” he said. “There’s a guy here from Baltimore. It was a very good participation. “

Christian said it was all about running in the holiday spirit.

“These fundraisers that we have, whether it is for tourism, to improve the region or for a good cause like the Gray Matters Foundation,” he said. “It’s really nice to be able to go out and have these events and see people having fun again.”

One of the runners, Keith Adams, agreed with that sentiment.

“It’s for a good cause for one thing. I love and love to run and I love challenges, ”he said. “It’s a very good challenge, it’s a good course.”

Christian said they are already planning ahead, making the next one bigger and better.

“When we can plan a little better because of COVID, maybe we’d like to have some live music and some food and stuff afterwards,” he said. “It’s sort of a bigger event, but I was super happy to see the participation this year.”

Christian said more than 60 people attended the event.

The event raised over $ 3,000 for Gray Matters.
