Travel trends come and go all the time. For a moment, everyone seems to be in Bali, then Lisbon, then Costa Rica. But what about in 2022? Which destinations were the most popular this year?
Airline ticket database company ForwardKeys has the truth. ForwardKeys analyzed destinations based not on total passenger numbers, but on their growth since 2019 — which was the last year tourism was at similar levels — to show which destination tourism industries have performed best over the past few years. last 12 months.
According to data from ForwardKeys, the best performing country of 2022 was the Dominican Republicwhich welcomed 5% more visitors this year than in 2019. 5% may not seem like many, but, bearing in mind that we’re still recovering from the pandemic, that’s a pretty impressive level of growth.
The next stage of the study was Turkeywhich managed to maintain the same levels of tourism as in 2019, followed by Costa Rica and Mexicowho both did the same.
Here are the top 10 countries that performed best this year in terms of visitor numbers, along with the percentage change from 2019.
- Dominican Republic (+5%)
- Turkey (0 percent)
- Costa Rica (0 percent)
- Mexico (0 percent)
- Jamaica (-5%)
- Pakistan (-5%)
- Bangladesh (-8%)
- Greece (-12%)
- Egypt (-15 percent)
- Portugal (-16%)
As you can see, many countries ranked well not because they had more visitors than in 2019, but because they simply didn’t lose as many tourists as other countries. In other words, while the pandemic may be over, the travel industry is still a long way from fully recovering.
