Jobs are at an all time high in the United States

Yet another sign of the times of the COVID-19 pandemic, job vacancies have reached an all-time high in the United States.

Have you been eating at a restaurant here lately? If so, you’ve probably experienced longer wait times than usual due to businesses being 100% open with only a fraction of the workforce that was in place before the pandemic.

KOAM reports that there were 8.1 million job postings in March, an increase of almost 8%. This figure is the highest on record since December 2000.

Many companies, especially those in the service sector, are struggling to find new workers. Many people are reluctant to take a job for fear of contracting COVID-19. But, several Republicans in Congress argue that the additional $ 300 per week in federal unemployment on top of the state’s average unemployment payment of $ 320 discourages people from seeking employment.

President Joe Biden took issue with the idea that the additional payment of $ 300 was to blame for the labor shortage. However, he urged the Department of Labor to reinstate the job search rule, which was suspended during the pandemic when many businesses were forced to close:

Anyone who receives unemployment, who is offered a suitable job, must accept the job or lose their unemployment benefits.

It will be interesting to see if and when the work situation returns to normal.
