Chenango Sheriff Challenger arrested in October Defeated

Some races in Chenango County have been closely watched this year, including the competition for mayor of Norwich and a county sheriff’s competition that raised eyebrows for a candidate who had seen a candidate arrested before election day.

Republican Brian Doliver defeated Democrat John Quattroccini 907-31 to become Norwich’s next mayor.

One contest that likely garnered a lot more attention than usual in the final days of the campaign was the Chenango County Sheriff’s Contest.

This race turned out to be a contest with little controversy as current Chenango County Sheriff Ernest Cutting Jr. overwhelmingly defeated Democrat Debra Cubbage: 6,872 votes to 1,418 to win another term. .

It is not clear whether a run-in with the law by the Democratic candidate has anything to do with her loss. On October 12, the 71-year-old woman from Norwich and a 21-year-old friend from Yonkers were arrested by New York State Police and charged with felony trespassing. The couple were accused of entering a house in the city of Plymouth without permission and staying inside illegally. Cubbage then posted on her campaign Facebook page that she had gone home with her friend to “deal with a personal situation.”
