Biden Warns of US Peril of Trump’s ‘Dagger’ on Democracy

WASHINGTON (AP) – President Joe Biden forcefully accuses Donald Trump and his supporters of holding a “dagger in the throat of democracy” with his election lies that sparked last year’s deadly assault on the U.S. Capitol.

Biden used the anniversary of the attack on Thursday to warn that the U.S. system of government remains under urgent threat.

The day’s ceremonies were largely attended by Democrats but not Republicans – a demonstration of the hold Trump and his views still hold over the party.

The nation’s divisions remained clear in a day many hoped would be a day of reconciliation.
